Chat - The Term

The concept "Chat" comes from the English word to chat and mean in German "Talking". In a chat hundreds of chat-participants are able to talk simultaneously with each other. This is made possible by so called chatrooms. In a chatroom a certain number of chat participants are able to talk at the same time. The "Talking" is made possible with the help of the keyboard - Every chat participant (Chatter) simply enters the text with the help of the keyboard, the text he would inform the others about and after a short "click" on the "Return" button or on the "Send" button, the typed text is displayed in the chat room, in which oneself is being located - All other chatter now can, those who are actually located in that room, read the "Typed Text". Writes now another chat participant something, the conversation is continued etc. At the chat entrance, every user is asked for the input of a so-called chat nick (nickname), this nickname can be chosen individually and can even be registered in some cases and being protected and stored with a personal password. At the next login (chat-entrance), one only needs the before stored password and the necessary nickname.

In every chat there are typical rules, so-called Chat-Rules or Chatiquette. Every chat participant must keep up to this rules, otherwise consequences threaten him, as for example the "Throwing out of the Chat", or in the worst case a "Durably banishing from the Chat" and a Locking of the "IP-Address" of the chat participant! At every "Chat Login" the nickname and the "IP-Address" is saved from every chat participant and from the "IP-Address" the user then can be found. Who think he is completely anonymous in a chat, is wrong! The rules are layed down by so-called "Chat Admins" or "Chat Ops". In case of questions or violations of other chat-participants one can inform these admins. Not in every chat active "Chat Ops" can be found, in the case of questions one often must turn himself to the "E-Mail" of the chat admin and hope for answer. However, at bigger chats mostly one or even several chat operators are present and then one can turn himself with the problem directly to these chat-operators.

In a chat one can not only talk with others, many modern chats also offer online games, as for example: "Battleships", "Reversi", "Backgammon", "Mancala", "nine men's morris", "chess" and "four wins". As a chat user, one often has the possibility to establish a profile of his own. This profile is usually a small nickpage (personal side), where personal data and details like age, place of birth, interests, preferences and even pictures of one's own and photos can be saved. A nickpage is nothing else then a personal virtual visiting card, which other chat-user are able to see. Of course everybody can decide himself, which data he would like to make to others accessible. Recently one can establish in certain chats so-called blogs, a blog is nothing else then a "virtual diary", where one can inform other people about experiences or to tell them what just occurs to oneself, these "blogs" then can be commented by others.

For many people "Chatting" has now become an important communication medium, not only in the leisure time, also at work - Chats are fast and for example: Instant-Messenger (special chat programme) messages can be exchanged in real time, also files, for example: Pictures can be transmitted fast and efficiently with these programmes. These qualities often avail employees of companies too, to exchange important information with other company members. Many people, primarily singles use the chat in their leisure time to start a conversation with other like-minded people, to flirt and also to get to know the one or other Chatter in real. One should not exaggerate the "Chatting", otherwise it can happen that one gets "Chat Addicted". However each for himself must decide at long last when and how much he chats.
